Who Is Julean and the Rai?

Julean and the Rai is a genre blended, songwriting heavy, acoustic-based indie folk / antifolk quartet with a powerful lead singer and a wide range of sounds.

Originally founded in 1995 as Dayton, Ohio band AXiS by frontman Julean Rai, and becoming Julean and the Rai in 2006 in New York City as part of NYC's Antifolk scene, Julean and the Rai has had iterations ... and lineups ... in four countries and six different states, including Dayton, Austin,   San Diego, Tucson, New York City, London, and Tijuana. Dayton, Ohio, and most recently Denver, Colorado. Julean and the Rai pulls from influences from everywhere from prog-rock legend Peter Gabriel to alt-country songwriter John Hiatt and bringing to mind musicians like Richie Havens, Ani Difranco, and Ravi Shankar.

2017 brings the new release "The War of the Sons of Light against the Sons of Darkness", a powerful cross-genre excursion into inner struggles, as well as the commercial remixing, remastering and re-release of favorites "Muse Tree", "Here.", and "Alexandria, Falling".

Julean and the Rai has 17 releases under their belt, including 5 live albums, a single, 3 limited European LPs, 3 demos, 3 EPs, and 2 full album LPs.

Julean and the Rai is currently under the self-owned label Origen Music, LLC. For booking and press related inquiries, please contact us at theraiband@gmail.com, or use the contact form here on the site.
