Here. (Demo LP) (European Release)

Julean and the Rai

"Here." was a 2008 European promotional release intended for bookings and hand to hand sales at shows, but later finding its way to distribution through the BitTorrent network. Containing tracks recorded alongside "Muse Tree", "Alexandria, Falling", and "Disconnect", these demos are also featured as performances on recent albums and live recordings.

This album has been pulled from most retailers to re-release a finally completed, fully remixed and remastered version of "Here." for American audiences.

Alexandria, Falling

Julean and the Rai

Performed live since 1999 as "Alexandria, Falling" and developed as a concept album in 2007, this EP contains an expanded 9-song opus in rich, complex Indian / Arabic / North African / Post-Rock fusion. Primarily instrumental (only two tracks contain vocals on this album) and segmented into individual chapters, the "Alexandria, Falling" EP is a paranoid look into a near-dystopian reality; the genocide of all that was once subtle, and real. The exploration of a vulnerable beauty unable to withstand the rigors of power struggle and close examination.

"Alexandria, Falling" is the 6th release of the band Julean and the Rai.

"Alexandria, Falling" was recorded in 2007, alongside "Muse Tree", "Here.", and "Disconnect" (later called "The New York State Demos"). It contains nine tracks of mostly instrumental material, and all of the songs contain either Egyptian and Indian fusion (Rai music), or Celtic compositions, as well as two tracks with strong political statements.

The songs are all based loosely around the title track, "1:1 Alexandria, Falling", which was written in 1999. Although released in Europe in 2008, by 2010, the album was well received in the Middle East, having reached there after being disseminated throughout the torrent networks in that time.

Originally released only as a promotional demo in Europe in 2007, in 2017, this album is queued for re-release as a finally completed, fully remixed and remastered version of "Alexandria, Falling" for American audiences.

Muse Tree (Demo LP) (European Release)

Julean and the Rai

The album "Muse Tree", which contains many songs from early in Julean Rai's songwriting career, as well as some newer songs written for the album, is all about the real people and events in Julean's life, starting from his journey leaving home at seventeen. From "The Roots" (a story about losing a first love while at the same time choosing to leave home), to "Fifth Street Coffee Song" (a story about 90s coffee shop culture), to "For Me" (a song about a last jaunt with an old friend before friendship fades into early adulthood), each song is an autobiographical account of real life, real people, real loss, and real change.

In an abandoned warehouse-turned-artist's-studios, with two guitars, a snare drum, a mixing console, scattered percussion instruments, and piecemeal recording equipment rented for him by a friend, Julean set out to create an album that had been both performed and waiting for galvanization for over a decade. The studio became his home for the next 40 days; waking to record and often falling asleep at the soundboard in the loft above the studio. Julean would eat, sleep, record, and master his creation in that place; rarely leaving the confines of the studio.

These sessions for the "Muse Tree" would also include sessions for album two, "Darlene" (European release: "Here."), as well as "Alexandria, Falling" and "Disconnect". He would not return to New York until all four projects were completed, and ready to be heard.

With the aid of friend and artist Benjamin Bader and promoter Bill Cunningham, Julean would go on to complete all four projects and make his return to New York City, while writing the material for the songs both featured on upcoming albums, like "The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness", as well as unreleased material, and the songs from the "Candy" EP (featured prominently on the "Live at the Baggot Inn" EP).

This was the second attempt to perfect this first chapter: the first occurred three years earlier, in 2003.

"Muse Tree" was to be used as sellable merchandise to fund a hastily planned move to Europe from New York City, and was equally hastily mixed, mastered and burned to CDRs alongside printed, one-sided covers for the trip (called the "European demos".

Distributed by hand during last minute open mic spots, squeezed in shows, busking excursions and eventually real shows in London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Vienna, Hradec, many points in Romania and Hungary, and eventually Poland (where Julean settled for a time), the album eventually found its way onto the torrent networks, which was responsible for much of the early distribution of this album.

In 2017, the album was pulled from most online retailers in order to work on a fully remixed and remastered version of "Muse Tree", which contained unreleased takes and material from the original sources and a professional master.

This album is currently available for streaming only on this site.
